Jaume Alborna – Run Plant Engineer

An everyday challenge, continuous learning and a great development opportunity both personally and professionally – that’s what Dow has given me so far.

My name is Jaume. Dow has played an important role in my academic career since I started my Bachelor in Chemical Engineering at Universitat Rovira i Virgili in 2007. During the first year of my studies, Dow sponsored an award for the best integrated project, which fortunately my team and I won. Since then, I realized Dow had a strong influence during my studies as the company was always organizing conferences, visits to its facilities for the Chemical Engineering students.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to do an internship at Dow. However, after I finished my Masters I received the Dow Chemical Award 2014, which consisted of a permanent position within the company. I was offered four different locations to work in; Italy, Portugal, UK or Spain. I decided to relocate to the UK, where I had already lived for a year through the Erasmus program.

I started working at the Dewsbury Site in August 2014 as a Run Plant Engineer within the Dow Coatings Materials business (DCM). During the first 3 months I got to know the Dow systems, the production process and, above all, the Dewsbury team. Then in October, I was able to attend the Emulsions Training at Collegeville, PA, USA. It was one my best experiences ever.

Since January 2015, I have taken on much more responsibility in my role. Four brand new products have been introduced at Dewsbury since then, and I have worked on their scale-up process by taking full ownership of these new processes. I am also responsible for the asset utilization of the plant, as well as being part of the waste water reduction team at Dewsbury.

Joining Dow was one of the best opportunities given to me and I would define my experience to date as; an everyday challenge, continuous learning and a great development opportunity both personally and professionally.
